Poll results: If Trump becomes US President, how will it affect EV transition?

Here's what our readers think.

If Trump becomes US President, how will it affect EV transition?

I’m very happy 261 of you took the time to vote. Thank you.
Here are the results:

43 votes (16.5%) said Trump can be good for EVs in US
218 votes (83.5%) said Trump can be bad for EVs in US

Also, 62 of you gave additional context on why you thought so (love to see it 💚). I uploaded all of your comments below. It isn’t easy creating a discussion out of a newsletter, but I’d say we’re doing pretty well here. Remember — you can comment publicly via the comment section in the end of the newsletter.

“Trump would be good for EVs in US”

(in no particular order)

I checked “good” but the reality is that the White House, no matter who is in it, will have no impact on BEV adoption. The BEV is now accepted as a more-or-less normal vehicle choice for drivers.

My Model-3 is now 6 years old. I ordered it before the roll-out. Nearly everyone told me I was crazy and they would never own one. Now some of them are driving Teslas. I now see Rivians regularly on the road here in Texas. The BEV has fully entered the mainstream and is generally accepted.

B

I think the Chinese Cars will trickle in to the US economy no matter what. Hopefully that will help speed up the process of other makes (US, German, and Japanese) to jump into EVs.

M

It's a net good. Even Trumper/Merica firefighters like my brother still caved and got a Model 3 for his commuter. Plenty of demand, so a stronger middle class economy will result in a stronger automotive and therefor EV market.

A B

Lower interest rates are much more important than tax credits. Real income growth is also very important. Biden's policy was to raise oil prices and this has been successful. Unfortunately, pursuing immediate transition away from fossil fuels has accelerated energy cost leading to inflation and decreasing wages relative to inflation. Economy was much better under Trump.

B

Only good EV manufacturers will remain, swapping off all players living only on EV subventions.

T

Tesla doesn’t need subsidies. Legacy Auto do. The transition to EV is happening regardless of who is president..

D

Trump is the party of climate change denial, deregulation leading to more pollution, and anti-competitive grifting. EVs will be low on the list of things to care about since my focus will need to shift to domestic human rights.

K A

With lower interest rates and a better economy will lead to greater EV sales.

The comments on those who chose “Trump would be bad for EVs in US”

"A Trump presidency might involve a removal of the current ev tax credits and the implementation of policies that encourage Americans to continue buying ICE vehicles. I believe the legacy automakers are trying to milk as much remaining profits out of ICE vehicle sales as possible. Even though the Biden administration has awarded almost $2 billion in grants to enable legacy automakers to convert some factories for ev production, that may not be enough to offset the ICE vehicle profits that remain.

This ultimately slows down an EV transition. Between ICE and hybrid vehicles, Americans are not able to see the benefits of using evs. The development of the charging infrastructure (related to ev transitioning) will also be slowed since any companies considering providing charging networks will be reluctant if federal policies contradict a transition to evs.

Meanwhile, China continues advancing in their ev transition. American tariffs deny Americans the low ev prices that comes with competition. It's like putting tariffs on Japanese vehicles during the 70's and 80's while American automakers where producing low quality vehicles. Americans would be left with low quality American-built cars. "

M. S

Bad in short term, but probably irrelevant in the long term as the tech will succeed regardless.

D. C

Both Trump and his VP have talked bad about EVs.
J.D. Vance ... 2024-03-27 ...” Between wear and tear on tires, road damage (EVs are much heavier than gas powered cars), mining practices, etc., the environmental cost of EVs is radically understated.”
Trump ... “They don’t go far, they cost a fortune ... the shift to EVs is a job killer.”

S

Could go either way: Trump has been anti-EV but Musk is backing him!!

J

Cutting of government subsidies.

R. B

Directly committed to undoing EPA rules and IRA investments. Has called EVs horrible job killers and made them an unfortunate part of the US culture war.

A. S

Expect Republicans to try and remove consumer incentives for EV purchases, so demand and then industry interest in making EV investments will go down.

K. D

He does not care about EV advancement.

B. P

He is likely to undo EV incentives and cater to oil companies.

S

He thinks electric planes are solar powered.

T

He wants to kill EVs.

R

He will try adding federal fees to EVs.

F

He’ll probably eliminate incentives to purchase EVs, and increase tariffs on foreign made EVs all of which will make it more expensive to buy them.

S

He’ll remove incentives.

A

He's a Luddite.

But ironically, it could be good for Tesla.

T

He's all about turning it up on gas/oil. Don't see how that fits with EVs let alone climate control.

B

He’s clearly indicated he’s anti-EVs and will roll back tax incentives.

B. F

He's way to "traditional" and pro-big-oil so I really doubt EVs will have an "easy life" under his administration.

Z

His base is electrified (har har) by the misinformation about EVs (dirtier than ICE, don't work in winter, batteries need to be replaced often, ICE cars are being banned, take hours to charge on a road trip, etc.). Even if Trump doesn't dislike EVs directly, he can deliver wins to his base by working against EV progress.

S

His base likes fossil fuels.

M T

His policies back oil companies and hinder regulations combating climate change. That's not good for EVs.

S

His policies don’t support green thinking.

J

I see a number of people confused about Elon Musk endorsing Trump and Vance, both climate change deniers, anti-green and anti-EV.

"Surely they would be bad for #Tesla?!"

Elon couldn't give a f***! This is about protecting himself from SEC and DOJ indictments. Self interest!

I don't believe a word Trump says - he habitually lies and changes his mind to wherever the financial and political wind blows.

G

I work for an EV company and the tariffs are already bad… If Trump does what he wants, they’re gonna get worse. Of course, Biden wants to look tough on China so it’ll probably still not be good but Trump would be worse/more protectionist.

X

I'm going to lean towards BAD, but... I do have HOPE he will listen to Elon Musk or at least get educated! Trump is an information seeking, consultant advice seeking and hopefully an intelligent analysis type of person. Honestly I don't think he is not that business, technical or manufacturing smart at all. Look at where his business has been, NOT IN MFG.

Elon better have gotten a huge promise and place in the administration for one of those who support Tesla, Space X, X, Neuralink and STARLINK, oh wait the Boring company too if they still exist. Whew! I don't trust the backlash towards Elon and his companies!

Government contracts are skewed, just ask Lloyd Chapman a Small Business GERU in the U.S.A. I am waiting for Trumps true Policy proposals and not some lofty hot air promises as politicians are good at. I am INDEPENDENT and think rules need to be laid out on the two parties that have MUDDIED our Politics in America. Shame on them!

D

I’m worried all the spending for the transition that the Biden administration has spent will be cut off and no tax benefits.

C

In short term it will be bad. But we all know the future - there's nothing Trump can do about it. He might stall, but states are independent enough to give a middle finger to POTUS.

K

It’s very obvious that trump hates EVs just listen to his speeches at the MAGA rallies spewing lies after lies about electric cars, he is so ignorant on the subject, and then Musk has no pride and openly supports that political party, I guess he is a billionaire and could care less who buys his cars.

J

No more tax credits, no more USPS EVs, no local/state EV mandates permitted, California clean air exemption goes away.

M

Per the 'speech' last night another lie regarding a mandate.

M H

Subsidies for fossil fuels (tax breaks and drilling rights) will continue (or increase) and pollution regulations will be reduced. Subsidies for EVs will be reduced or eliminated. Misinformation and fear about EVs will proliferate, and many people who would really enjoy EVs if they were willing to try them never will (or it make take another four years).

B

Tax incentives at risk.

B

The political fallout will be even worse. The move to authoritarian hell will be intense. People will die and many more will suffer horribly. As one analyst perhaps his niece or the author of his real estate experience noted "The cruelty is the point". That is why he will harm the clean energy transition of which the long term harms may be the worst of everything he does. So labeling it as bad is an understatement.

J

Trump doesn’t believe in climate change! Elon totally pivoted from his assets and charging network- awful (and stupid).

M

Trump has already said he will roll back policies related to EV’s and give support to the fossil fuel industry. Bad for the US bad for the world.

D

Trump has always been committed to the fossil fuel industry. I don’t see that changing.

P

Trump has openly solicited bribes from big oil companies. He will immediately destroy all EV and climate initiatives upon taking office.

A

Trump has presented misleading, and downright false, information about green energy efforts. I feel that it is very likely that he will do what he can to stop progress.

T

Trump has said he is not in favor EVs and wants to bring back coal and increase oil production. He believes climate change is fake news.

D H

Trump has said, “Global warming is a democratic hoax”. He also has said” Drill, drill”. Most, of his base are for gas cars, The louder the better is their motto. Trump says “Windmills cause cancer and kill birds”. Plus , if Biden was for EV’s, he will do the opposite.

J P

Trump is a pathological narcissist. All issues are filtered through his disorder. Trump defers to the fossil fuel industry and has not shown any interest in clean energy. I am reasonably confident that he doesn’t understand it at a high school level.

J B

Trump is all-in for the fossil fuel industry. You only need to listen to him and look at his record to see that he is hostile to clean energy.

J P E

Trump is allegedly considering switching the subsidy from EVs to gas cars.

S W

Trump is in deep with the oil companies. He will set us back 10 years and put the US behind China 20 years.

N

Trump says global warming is a hoax and he worships oil. He is bff with MBS - who gave Jared $2 billion. He is anti-green energy. He says windmills cause cancer. He will roll back EPA MPG targets. He will stop EV subsidies. He will stop green energy projects. does any of that sound like it's good for EVs?

R L

Trump wants to drill baby drill. He doesn't believe un global warming. He does not know basic science.

J

Trump will be bad for EVs in the USA. I really like our Tesla but won't ever buy another due to Musk support of Trump. Musk should have kept his political leanings to himself, why risk alienating such a large segment of potential customers.

S

Trump will eliminate green energy tax credits wherever possible, including ev subsidies and will promote fossil fuels.

C

Trump will give even more power to coal, gas, fossil fuels, and yes, maybe Elon.... but I doubt that will help the sustainability of earth as a whole.

T

Trump will push down the urgency in our transition to EV. There isn't a republican financial incentive to leave big oil for electric.

B

Trump will rollback ALL of the climate related inititives.

C

You can't just separate if Trump is good or bad for EVs, and he hates EVs. Trump would be bad for the whole world regarding EVs, climate change, basic freedoms, women's reproductive rights, he loves Putin and on and on. He will be a Fascist Dictator. Check out project 2025 to see more horrible details of project 2025.
